Cosplability ... and then?
Help me realize my dream
As I have written within the volume Cosplability, for 20 years in Italy as a non-self-sufficient disabled person with Friedreich's Ataxia, I have lived in a Society that with architectural and mental barriers constantly reminds me how I am the 'unfortunate exception they would like to forget'.
Although Cosplay and writing have diluted the burden over these decades, they do not assure me of even a minimally decent future. At least not staying here in Italy where, after Betty (my only caregiver who is now 78 years old), I will have no one to take care of me.
So in the full spirit of Cosplability, it's up to me to choose whether to accept it or rebel, and I...decided to rebel!
More, I aim to move to the quintessential rebel homeland: Ireland. There, one of my dearest 'brothers' at heart, with whom I have planned this venture, awaits me with open arms. He will support me in every way, helping me build a future life worth living.
Why a fundraiser?
There are only two options:
You have lots, but really lots of money, and you pay for H24 care, to live in the hands of hired strangers, staying in your home;
Or if like everyone else, including me, you are not a millionaire, you go to an RSA where the state takes care of you, but you lose any freedom (even just deciding what to eat or what time to get up) by being locked there forever.
I, fortunately, have a third option, a way out, a very dear friend, practically a stepbrother, who moved to Ireland (a much more disability friendly country) years ago, who is just waiting for Betty and me to join him, and together with whom we will live and take care of me even when I am alone.
An international relocation, however, is not an easy, quick, and least of all cheap thing, so every euro I can scrape together will be a step toward Ireland and the security of having a decent future life.
